I received newspapers every week for our school. The newspapers were a tremendous addition to our library of periodicals. We did numerous activities with the newspaper and the ideas that came along with the papers each month were very helpful. The Kid Scoop page was wonderful and the students enjoyed them very much. Kid Scoop We have very much enjoyed your newspaper pages. We use it to promote reading and it's a valuable tool in the classroom. As you can see from the students' letters, we all appreciate the resource and your time in getting The Register in our classroom. Thank you so much. Bruce Hitchko, 5th and 6th Grade Teacher
I would like to continue receiving newspapers for my classroom. In addition to looking through the Kid Scoop section and completing many of those activities, my students use the newspaper throughout the week to explore math, writing, language, etc. My students enjoy looking through the pictures, cutting out headlines, finding words, completing number sentences etc. with the use of their newspapers. I find the newspaper to be a valuable tool in my classroom. Thank you so much for your efforts in producing Kid Scoop. Amanda Hulsey Third Grade Teacher, Chiloquin School, OR
My teachers absolutely love Kid Scoop! The requests are coming in like crazy, I even have teachers who want me to save classroom copies of the pages they'll miss during Christmas break! Thanks for a wonderful product! Beth Wilson Daily Times, Wilson, NC
Tracy Hall'students were engrossed Monday, not in a TV show, video game or comic book, but in newspapers. the students were using newspapers in a class project ... and this was not the first time Hall had used newspapers as a learning tool. "Usually once a week, we use the newspaper for a different activity." In this case, students had to write a narrative of how to escape from a fortified castle, using only items they could find in the classified section of a newspaper. Their answers were many and creative. They found a boat to traverse the river, and a guitar to play to put the guards to sleep. Classrooms all over the country are participating in similar projects. According to the Missouri Press Association, "Newspapers in Education is a partnership between newspapers and school in which teachers use classroom sets of newspapers as an educational resource in a variety of age and curriculum settings." I believe it is essential to being a productive citizen, to be well read regarding one's community. Newspapers in Education helps to develop such awareness in a number of different ways; articles, Kid Scoop, ads, etc. As an educator, I love the program. Sarah J. Williams, Napa, CA
Students needing enrichment participate in challenging newspaper activities which allows me time to work with students that need additional assistance. All my children submit stories to the Weekly Writing Corner. I'm please that you try to publish at least one story from every school. When their stories are published, they feel very proud. This helps increase a students self-esteem and encourages all of them to become writers. Thank you very, very much!" Lori Welty 6th grade teacher
This school year our high school has implemented a daily twenty minute Silent Sustained REading time which is required for all students and staff. I can honestly say with great satisfaction, that the students reach for the newspaper more often than any other reading material! Reading our local newspaper makes them feel more connected to the community in which we live. Most importantly, the self esteem of my students is boosted because of student exposure in the local paper. Many of my students are involved in sports, drama, music and other local events throughout the community. The paper does an excellent job of highlighting those events. I subsequently cut all articles pertaining to my students and post on a "News Board" in my classroom throughout the school year. The volume of articles on the wall by the end of the year is AWESOME!" Thank you for the Kid Scoop/Newspaper in Education Program. I hope you understand how much the program means to my students. Many of them are poor so they do not have the daily newspaper in their homes. Even students who do have the REgister delivered to their homes have been able to learn so much about the world through regular guided reading in the classroom. They were amazed they could read about events occurring right here. They have enjoyed finding names of people they know in the paper. The Kid Scoop section has been a revelation for my students. the students did not know that "real" people can and do submit their work for publication. Each of the children who have been published has experienced renewed interest in honing their writing skills. Some of my shyest students have found an outlet for their creative voice in writing. I am amazed at their progress each month when I am assembling our anthology of student work. Revalee Hemken Howell Mountain Elementary School, Angwin, CA
