The Red Cross & Clara Barton The Clara Barton National Histoirc Site The National Park Service web site for The Clara Barton National Historic Site is a satisfying virtual field trip. Clara Barton National Historic Site commemorates the life of Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross. The house in Glen Echo, MD served as her home, headquarters for the American Red Cross and a warehouse for disaster relief supplies. From this house, she organized and directed American Red Cross relief efforts for victims of natural disasters and war. Examine the links to a Barton chronology, photographs of her, primary source documents, information about the building and a lesson plan for teaching with this historic place. Masters of Disaster Lesson Plans American National Red Cross has developed Masters of Disaster lesson plans, aligned with National Education Standards, clustered around three grade levels: K-2, 3-5 and 6-8. Select a natural or man-made hazard, like earthquakes, tornadoes, chemical emergencies, terrorism or general preparedness. Each lesson provides extensive background for teachers, general information on the disasters and lesson plan adaptations. While the site is incomplete, there is a great deal of value for teachers here. The Junior Red Cross Since the founding of the Junior Red Cross in 1917, youth and the Red Cross have been partners. Today, the involvement of young people with the Red Cross is more important than ever. Red Cross provides young people with meaningful opportunities for education, training, and volunteer/community service so that they remain a part of the Red Cross family throughout their lives. Young people up to age 24 make up 40 percent of all Red Cross volunteers. Explore the buttons on this web site and you will discover learning and volunteer opportunities for children as young as preschool. |
