For most of us, electricity is “just there”—a convenient source of energy we use daily and may take for granted! But if you’ve ever experienced a “blackout”, or time when the electricity was not working, you quickly appreciate how much we depend on electricity for many things each day—from charging our computers and cellphones, to heating our food and water. Electricians are certified trained experts who know how to wire buildings so electricity flows safety, and also know how to repair systems when they stop working. This issue shines the spotlight on electricians, why working as an electrician can be an attractive career choice, and the importance of always behaving safely around electricity or electrical appliances. Imagine a day without electricity, and you’ll understand how this career touches everyone’s life!
In this issue students will:
- read informational text about electricity
- understand the benefits of a career as an electrician
- read about safety rules
- look for objects in the news that depend on electricity to work
- locate newspaper words that relate to electricity
- deconstruct a news article to think like a reporter
