Odds are some everyday objects in your home or garage were created by welders! Once students complete the reading and activities in this issue, they’ll be able to point them out. A welder is a person who works with heat to make metal objects attach—or “weld”—together. Welders invent, create, design, and craft objects of different sizes and shapes—from bridges to gates to cars. With the help of a blowtorch and intensely hot flames, a welder can mold, cut, and bend metal into just about any shape imaginable. As early as high school students can try their hands at welding. Not only is welding a useful skills for repairing things, it can lead to a rewarding and successful career. Fire away!
