On the last Monday of May, Americans pause to remember those who gave their lives defending our country—and other nations—in times of war. Memorial Day merits a day off from work or school that often attracts folks to weekend getaways, backyard barbecues, or other outdoor activities. It’s always special to gather with friends, but it’s more important to remember why our government dedicated this day specifically to honor those who served in military campaigns. For families this is a “teachable moment” and opportunity to pause, reflect, and learn more about the brave men and women who died defending the freedoms we enjoy.
