After candidates win elections, they usually participate in a special ceremony to welcome them into their new position. When the winner is stepping into the role of President of the United States, the ceremony—or “inauguration”—is world news witnessed by millions of people on all continents. In 2021 this special ceremony will take place on January 20th in Washington, D.C. as Joseph R. Biden becomes the 46th President of the United States. Learning about the executive branch of government develops civic awareness and an understanding about how a democracy functions, improves, and endures from one generation to the next. This issue introduces future voters to things “presidential”—from what it’s like to live and grow up in the White House to understanding the symbolism of the president’s seal to the solemn words of the president’s “Oath of Office.” It’s never too early to begin learning about democracy, and the future of our country depends on an educated citizenry. Who knows? Someone reading this issue might be a future president or vice-president in the making!

In this issue budding ornithologists will:

  • read informational text about the presidential inauguration
  • sequence phases in the president’s Oath of Office
  • locate “I” words in the news and alphabetize findings to the second letter—or beyond!
  • unscramble the U.S. flag’s Pledge of Allegiance
  • use context clues to select precise vocabulary in a passage with missing words
  • locate articles in the newspaper to advise the new president about children’s concerns
  • write a persuasive letter about how the president can help kids
