Jump into the “Kid Scoop Time Machine” and travel back almost 200 years to meet the first African-American journalists. From writers to publishers, meet the men and women who pioneered Black-owned newspapers in the United States. Even before the Civil War, newspapers provided Black people with a much-needed venue to share news, ideas, and opinions. Newspapers provided an incentive to learn and practice reading skills at a time when not all Americans had access to school. Over the decades newspapers, journals and magazines became more available, more popular, and kept more Americans up-to-date on current events. This issue celebrates those pioneering African-Americans, who contributed to the history of journalism. Read on, Time Travelers!
