Flying thousands of miles across the ocean is easy on an airplane. You sit back, relax, and let technology carry you to far away lands. Imagine making this same journey using only your wings! Such wings would need to be strong, wide, and powerful. The mighty albatross is a bird built for long distance travel! One of the largest flying seabirds, the albatross can soar hundreds of miles in search of food for itself and its young. But scooping up food from the sea sometimes includes scooping up pieces of manmade trash that pollute the environment. The worst offender? Plastic! What can you do? Plenty! Kid Scoop provides simple ways kids can help the albatross thrive and keep the world a cleaner healthier place for all life forms—including ours!

In this issue students will:

  • read informational text about the albatross
  • sequence information
  • use context clues to locate appropriate vocabulary
  • understand how human actions impact ecosystems
  • read closely to edit a passage
  • identify odd/even numbers
  • compare and order numbers found in the news by “greater than” and “less than”
  • write creatively about flying like a bird
