Achoo! Itchy rashes, runny noses, sneezing or coughing can be signs that your body is being invaded by an allergen. What are allergies? Allergies are reactions your body has to certain foods, animals, plants or conditions in the environment. And, boy, can they cause problems! Your body will fight back when any harmful germs gets inside, but sometimes your body gets mixed up and attacks things in some people that don’t harm others, like peanuts, strawberries, kiwi, grasses or mold. If you know what causes you to itch, swell, sneeze or wheeze the best thing to do is stay away from those irritants! Lots of famous people—professional athletes, movie stars and even presidents—have had allergies and learned to thrive by keeping those invaders under control. You can, too!
In this issue students will:
- read expository text about allergens
- learn what kinds of food, plants, or animals can cause allergies
- read about a famous athlete who won Olympic gold
- discover how to avoid allergic reactions
- use the newspaper to identify allergens and healthy practices
- edit an expository passage
- use imagination to write creatively about an imaginary allergy, like reacting to homework or the color blue
