April Fool Your Eyes

← Continue shopping

April Fool’s Day invites pranks, practical jokes and hoaxes. Usually played on other people in jest, these tricks celebrate the arrival of spring months. But what if instead of fooling others, you played a prank on yourself? You’ll discover that sometimes things are not what they seem at all! Optical illusions use light, patterns, lines and colors to tease our vision and brains into perceiving things differently. Try to fool—or outsmart—your own brain! Sometimes the eye is confused by how things are placed on a page, or with the use of a certain background design. Shapes may make things identical look very different. This issue fools around with clever activities that will capture your attention and trick your eyes! How many will fool you?

In this issue students will:

  • Read expository text about visual illusions
  • Look carefully and closely at designs
  • Use a ruler to measure carefully
  • Use the newspaper to add money amounts
  • Be introduced to the Hermann Grid Illusion
  • Observe and evaluate the use of visual graphics used on newspaper layouts
  • Write about your favorite April Fool’s jokes and riddles
