Science, Technology, Engineering and Math—known as S.T.E.M.—have been enriched and influenced by the contributions from men and women of diverse countries, cultures and races. This issue celebrating Black History Month highlights famous inventions and discoveries by African American scientists and engineers. Ever use a Super Soaker to stay cool on a hot day? Speak or sing with a microphone? Eaten a peanut butter sandwich? These everyday marvels—and more—owe their existence to black science pioneers and inventors. From machines that attach shoe tops to astronauts orbiting the earth, inventions make our lives easier, safer or more exciting and open pathways to the future. Perhaps the next great inventor is sitting at your kitchen table!
