Children count! Without children, the world would be without a future. They are the “caregivers-to-be” of all that is precious on our planet. In Mexico, they even have their own holiday called “Dia del Nino”—or “Children’s Day”—celebrated every April 30th. How do they honor kids? With games, favorite foods, lively music, and no classes—everything kids love, because everyone loves kids! This issue crosses the border to join the fun with patterns, puzzles, and piñatas! Discover unique traditions, a song praising chocolate, and how to build your own piñata to fill with favorite treats. Add April 30th to your calendar, and celebrate “Dia del Nino” in your own home!

In this issue students will:

  • read informational text about a special holiday for kids
  • follow written directions to make a piñata
  • complete a balloon pattern
  • sing a Spanish song
  • solve silly puns
  • think about writing a book for kids
  • use the newspaper to locate descriptive words for a letter to the editor
  • create a “Children’s Rights” poster
