Dia de los Muertos

← Continue shopping

When we enter the holiday season, we typically think of Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s. Thanks to our nation’s vast diversity of cultures and races, additional holidays have become part of the reasons to celebrate. Día de los Muertos—or “Day of the Dead”—comes by way of Latin America and coincides with Halloween. Unlike Halloween’s singular night of revelry, Día de los Muertos lasts three full days and includes food, family, and fun as relatives invite the souls of those who have passed before us to return for a visit. Special tables are decorated with photographs, clothing, meals, candles, and favorite objects to welcome these special visitors with love and warmth in a wonderful tribute of remembrance.

In this issue students will:

  • Read informational text about a special Latin American holiday
  • Read and learn the meaning of Spanish words
  • Find similarities and differences in decorative skulls
  • Look for silly things in a Trick-or-Treat illustration
  • Complete a word challenge using only the letters in a special holiday phrase
  • Use the newspaper to create an “ofrenda” for your home town
  • Tiptoe through even and odd numbered tombstones
  • Use parts of speech to complete a “Funny Halloween Filler”
  • Invent a card game using antonyms (opposites)
  • Share favorite Halloween jokes and riddles with your pals
