A “trailblazer” is as person who does something for the first time ahead of everyone else. They “blaze” a “trail” through challengers and demonstrate courage, perseverance, and determination along the way. This issue focuses on the first African-American woman to work as a journalist at the prestigious Washington Post newspaper. Nowadays we see reporters representing all races and genders, but in 1961 things were different. From her early years, Dorothy Butler Gilliam had a dream to write articles for a newspaper. She worked hard, went to college, developed excellent reading, writing, and interviewing skills and kept focusing on her dream until it became true.
