Plastic pollution perils perfect planet! Finding ways to reduce plastic packaging is critical to keeping the earth’s ecosystem healthy. Unfortunately, plastic is in abundance—from product packaging to products themselves. Some types of plastic are recyclable. Other plastics, known as “soft” plastics, are not. One remarkable way to reuse soft plastic is for building. “Ecobricks” are plastic bottles filled with soft plastics that can be used in construction—just like bricks! This issue will help even our youngest engineers how ecobricks are created, used, and making a difference. You’ll even have a chance to build your own ecobrick from scraps!
In this issue students will:

- understand the plastic pollution problem and one solution
- follow directions to make an ecobrick
- calculate sums to learn what goes into ecobrick making
- complete a rebus crossword
- use the newspaper to locate plastic items that convert to creative eco-friendly packaging
- write about ways to save our planet
- write a letter to the editor of your local paper
