Fall Leaves

← Continue shopping

Science is in the air as fall brings opportunities to study changes between seasons. There is no more colorful display than leaves shifting from summer’s bright green to the red, brown, gold and purple hues of fall. Mother Nature’s own magic show of “presto, change-o” is really a slowdown of photosynthesis and a reduction in the chlorophyll the plant has been busy producing all summer. Studying leaves offers young scientists a chance to explore different kinds of trees, shapes and weather’s effect on plant growth. Your budding scientists will be outdoors gathering samples in no time. Don’t “leave” out this issue if you are looking for some hands-on fall fun!

In this issue young botanists will:

  • read expository text about why leaves change color in the fall
  • understand the components of photosynthesis
  • match leaf shapes to find a twin
  • unscramble letters to spell funky fall words
  • use the newspaper for a fall syllable scavenger hunt
  • look for descriptive autumn words in the news, then s-t-r-e-t-c-h words into sentences
  • write an opinion piece about the pluses—or problems—of eating like a plant!
