Food Chain

← Continue shopping

Everything on earth is interconnected and interdependent through millions of plant and animal communities. Nothing demonstrates interconnectivity as easily as the basic food chain that shows how energy and life sustain energy and life! A food chain connects plants and animals to each other as producers, consumers, and decomposers. Like links in a change, these players depend on each other to keep a healthy planet thriving. Young environmentalists will see how three different communities—evergreen, creekside, and grassland—follow identical pathways from producers to decomposers even if the life forms in each are vastly different. Students will understand that nature repeats patterns no matter the environment if the right conditions are present. Connected to this is the understanding that breaking the chain or interrupting the cycle will impact the lives that depend on it.You’ll use what you learn in your own neighborhood to identify a food chain closer to home!

In this issue students will:

  • learn about food chains and food webs
  • understand how animals and plants need each other to survive
  • learn new vocabulary words in context
  • complete three food chains in three different communities
  • use the newspaper to identify important connections in your life
