The Earth seems like a big planet for little explorers, but it’s actually only a small part of a larger group of planets orbiting our sun. Because the sun is the center of this activity, the group of planets—and its sun—are called a “solar” system. If you could fly a special rocket ship far above our solar system, you would discover that it’s only one of many millions of solar systems in a galaxy known as the “Milky Way.” On a clear night, it’s even possible to catch a glimpse of the “Milky Way” which resembles a “milky” white stream stretching across the dark sky. Ancient cultures have told stories about the origin of this celestial wonder.
This issue will introduce your budding astronomer to different types of galaxies and more out-of-this-world facts about our own Milky Way. So … climb into your imaginary space suit and prepare to launch. We’re heading to the stars!
In this issue, young space explorers will:
- Read expository text about galaxies
- Understand the difference between planets, solar systems, galaxies and the Milky Way
- Compare Milky Way legends from different cultures
- Learn the Greek origin of words
- Sequence sentence fragments to create a galaxy story that makes sense
- Use the newspaper to locate different shapes and to practice rounding money amounts
