The noble grizzly bear has long been native to the west coast of North America. In fact, when the California Republic was declared in 1846, it was named the “Bear Flag Revolt” because the participants placed a symbol of a grizzly on their flag. California’s state flag still bears the grizzly today. But this mighty symbol of strength, courage and independence is in danger of becoming extinct. Where 10,000 once roamed in California, today there are fewer than 1,000 in all the lower 48 states. Learn more about where they live, their habitats and needs as you practice map and sequence skills.
