This issue will whisk away young adventurers on a magic carpet to an ancient country located in southern Asia. Step into a home in India and you are likely to be greeted by a bright and cheerful rangoli. No, a rangoli is not the family pet! It’s a colorful design made of sand that is found in front of the door to greet visitors. Although no two rangolis are quite the same, they all follow certain traditions including the beauty of symmetry—or matching halves—in their designs. This issue introduces travelers to the colorful and rich traditions, geography and the mighty proud national bird of India.
In this issue students will:
- follow instructions to design a rangoli
- create poetry
- find similarities and differences in rangoli designs
- unscramble letters to spell grade appropriate words
- use the newspaper to locate letters in a spell hunt of India’s major cities
- understand the symbolism of the colors in India’s flag
- describe a mysterious geographical location and play with a partner
