You’ve heard of daydreamers staring out a window at scenes beyond the glass, but did you know you can gaze at night as well? Stargazers stare deep into the night sky and make discoveries of their own! Let’s celebrate Women’s History Month by spending time with Maria Mitchell—a famous stargazer and self-taught astronomer and mathematician who discovered a new comet while still a young girl. Her fascination with the night sky and its many objects led to a lifelong love of learning, observing and more discoveries. Young Maria lived at a time when women had fewer opportunities for careers. Her passion and perserverance led her to a position as an astronomy professor at one of the early colleges for women in the middle of the 19th century. Open the pages of this Kid Scoop issue to discover new learning for yourself. Miss Mitchell’s story will inspire stargazers in your home to step outside and look up!
