When is a holiday not a holiday? When it’s a Day of Service instead! Every January Americans have the unique opportunity to give back to their communities by volunteering time as a way to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. For thirty years, U.S. citizens have planted, cleaned up, helped neighbors and volunteered in events to keep Dr. King’s dream of service to community and country alive This issue helps even the youngest volunteers think about and identify ways they can turn their “day off” into a “day on!” What will you do this year?
In this issue students will:
- read informational text about the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday and Service Act
- create a list of service tasks
- identify and match volunteer ideas
- add missing vowels to spell words correctly
- make you way through pair of puzzling mazes
- discover local volunteer organizations in the news
- find ways you can help in your community
- solve a logic puzzle
- write about how YOU can make a difference!
