According to Mr. Popcorn, he is the best snack in the world with wide appeal and many attractive qualities. Other snacks disagree, spouting their own theories about why they are a better option. This lighthearted debate introduces “points of view” and “balanced reporting” in a way that makes sense to budding young writers who will have a chance to take a poll among their peers. Graphing the results will clearly demonstrate the most popular point of view and serve as a foundation for a short article about their findings. Is Mr. Popcorn right? Depends on your point of view!
In this issue students will:
- read informational text about points of view
- understand “balanced” news reporting
- analyze an article to identify viewpoints
- collect data, graph results, and write an article
- imagine what’s outside a photo in the news
- write from an insect’s point of view
- compare illustrations for appropriate use
- evaluate advertising
