The sun’s closest neighbor, planet Mercury, is a solar system marvel! Lacking atmosphere, Mercury is subject to frequent celestial bombardments from asteroids ad meteorites that crash into its surface causing enormous craters. Its quick trip around the sun means a Mercury year is only 88 days short, while the strong gravitational pull of the sun makes a day last 50 times longer than ours. Extreme temperatures make Mercury both too hot and too cold to sustain life—at least life as we know it! Named for the Roman messenger god famous for his swift feet, Mercury maintains a steady speed of over 100,000 miles an hour. Now that’s fast!
