Children love the rhythm and rhyme of poetry. When filled with creative use of language and just a touch of silliness, poetry can motivate children to read for pleasure. This issue looks at the poets behind the poems and provides some simple structures for young writers to try poetry on their own. Students will read about the Children’s Poet Laureates—Jack Prelutsky and Mary Ann Hoberman and learn more about the Hometown Heroes competition by meeting one of the winners who authors this page.
In this issue students will:
- be introduced to the first Children’s Poet Laureaute, Jack Prelutsky
- write a cinquain and a “people” poem
- use the newspaper to locate synonyms
- conduct a poll and summarize results
- use the internet to explore poetry and find out more about the Hometown Heroes competition
