Understanding national holidays and symbols strengthens civic virtue and strengthens our democracy. It’s never too early—or too late—to appreciate the contribution of each generation of Americans. Memorial Day activities encourage young citizens to search their own family history to uncover members who may have served their country in the armed forces. This issue is a tribute to those who gave in the past or are giving in the present in order to build a strong future.
In this issue students will:
- learn about different branches of the military and national symbols
- research family history
- use the newspaper to identify acts of civic virtue
- practice spelling
