Language expresses ideas, feelings, who we are, and what we believe. Idioms make language colorful by using words that mean something different from what they actually say. If you’re “barking up the wrong tree,” you’re on the wrong track. “Birds of a feather who flock together” are people who share common interests. You can be “over the moon” with excitement and have “ants in your pants.” Idioms help simplify complicated ideas, establish connections in conversation, add creativity to communication, and are fun to use! This issue introduces young linguists to the joy of idiomatic expressions. You’ll have “more fun than a barrel of monkeys” completing the puzzles as you learn about idioms. Live it up!
