Imagine standing before an enormous mountain of granite in the Black Hills of South Dakota and calculating how to carve images of famous Americans into the stone. Gutzon Borglum, American sculptor, visualized the 40’ high faces of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln first, later adding Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt. Using dynamite to remove stone, Gutzon directed his crew in what would become a 14-year project to memorialize four Presidents of the United States whose achievements contributed to our democracy, saved the union, and expanded American influence throughout the world. This issue of Kid Scoop takes you on a trip to visit Mount Rushmore where over three million visitors come each year—and you don’t have to leave your house!
