How are all forms, sizes, and shapes of life dependent on microscopic creatures that drift in the ocean? Meet the busy plankton, a plant and animal form of life that is responsible for much of the oxygen we—and other animals—need to survive. Through a process of “photosynthesis” tiny plankton contribute hugely to keeping our planet and its inhabitants thriving. It’s not only oxygen produced by plankton that sustains life! They are also the beginning of the food chain. The interdependency of our environment and its inhabitants is illustrated in this issue by looking more closely at this microscopic member … and as appreciative humans, we need to ensure that these critical contributors continue to thrive by keeping our oceans healthy and safe for all life forms—large and small.

In this issue students will:

  • read informational text about plankton
  • understand the food chain
  • learn about different types of plankton
  • use the newspaper to locate letters to spell content specific “ph” words
  • complete a plankton quiz
  • review a simple illustration of photosynthesis
  • write creatively about a strange beach discovery
