Honoring our nation’s leaders teaches young Americans about history, civics and the importance of democratic values. Abraham Lincoln and George Washington – two presidents who share February birthdays – are the focus of this red, white and blue issue. Their images are reflected in monuments, statues, paintings, and our nation’s currency attesting to their significant contributions. Activities help students learn why they especially are remembered each year.
In this issue students will:
- learn why Lincoln grew a beard
- why Washington became president and not “king”
- read examples of the presidents’ virtues and leadership
- use the newspaper to locate presidential information
- find the address of the White House and an opportunity to write a letter to the president
