Knowing what to do in emergencies is a critical life skill that must be taught and repeated from the earliest grade levels. This issue focuses on fire safety and easy to understand steps all children should know to prevent injury or mistakes in case of a fire from calling 911 to “Stop, Drop and Roll,” to information on how to escape from an unsafe situation. Activities using the newspaper will direct young readers to located synonyms, adjectives and stories about the positive and safe ways fire is useful to our lives.
In this issue students will:
- learn specific steps to take in an emergency
- how to prepare for an emergency by having an escape route and plan in advance
- learn about the connection between the dalmation and the fire department
- use the newspaper to find words related to the theme
- use the internet to research websites dedicated to fire safety
- conduct and summarize a poll
