A sign of strong money management skills is the ability to live within your means and stick to a budget. Good planning means accounting for taxes, too—those extra funds added to certain purchases that take a “bite” from your budget. But what do your taxes in turn do for you? This issue helps young economists understand why taxes are necessary and what goods and services they provide. Students will learn how taxes come back in ways that benefit the good of the community.
In this issue students will:
- read expository text about economics
- understand what taxes are and what they provide
- participate in dialogue with adults about taxes
- use economic terms to complete a cloze reading activity
- use a variety of coins to solve multiple ways to make a dollar
- use the newspaper to practice calculating tax
- write about creative ways to make money grow
- use editing skills to correct a “taxing” story
