Shelter Pets

de-shelterpetsPets bring companionship, comfort and joy into a home. But what happens when there are more pets than homes to care for them?  Sometimes they are abandoned – left to take care of themselves. Sometimes they are brought to stations called “shelters” where people care for them temporarily while waiting for another family to adopt them. But often there are far too many animals at shelters. This issue – that can spark conversations about responsibility, compassion, and civic duty – looks more closely at the fate of pets that become homeless.

In this issue students will:

  • read expository text
  • understand the responsibilities of pet ownership and consequences of choice
  • practice math facts to 20
  • use the newspaper to look for pet names
  • alphabetize
  • practice “cloze” reading and editing skills
  • write animal ads
