Does it make a different which store you choose to make your purchases? It can make a big difference depending on where the owner of the store lives! In your community there are likely stores owned by residents—those who live and work in your town—and stores owned by people who live elsewhere. Local owners will spend a larger portion of their earnings in the community making purchases, hiring local staff, and sponsoring teams or events. This issue requires critical thinking as your identify where goods and services are sold in your town, and whether those stores are locally or non-locally owned. While looking into the mental exercise of community economics, you’ll be invited to follow Kid Scoop’s “piggy bank workout” for some physical exercise. It’s never to early to learn the many ways that money matters!

In this issue students will:

  • read informational text about the economic impact of shopping in a locally-owned store
  • compare data displayed in circle graphs
  • use context clues to select correct vocabulary
  • understand that locally-owned stores return a greater percentage of money to the community
  • identify stores in your town that provide different goods and services
  • use your community newspaper to list businesses and their owners
  • follow written and visual directions for physical exercise
