Music brings joy to the world, expresses our feelings, and makes us want to get up and dance! Making music is as simple as finding things to bang, shake, tap, vibrate, pluck or twang. You can even use your body as an instrument! Such objects can be grouped together under the heading of “idiophones.” This issue will introduce young artists to the discovery, creation, and use of idiophones using objects found around the house. Discover how to make glasses “sing” by adding water. Learn to rustle up some jazzy maracas using rocks and a drinking cup. Invent drums and drumsticks from items in your drawers and cupboards. With a little imagination, you can create an entire band of instruments for the whole family! Ready? Set? Let’s make music!

In this issue students will:

  • read informational text about idiophones
  • follow written directions to make a variety of instruments
  • learn how to make glasses sing
  • add missing vowel to spell words accurately
  • use the newspaper to locate descriptive and onomatopoetic words
  • practice alphabetizing
  • locate words describing sounds of the ocean
  • select appropriate vocabulary words based on context clues
  • find similarities and differences in common objects
  • label fractional parts
