Years ago when most American families lived on farms, grew their own crops and raised animals, an enjoyable tradition was the summertime country fair. Families hitched up the horses, mules or oxen to their wagons and loaded good to sell, trade or auction. Everything from baked pies and handmade quilts to homegrown pigs, goats and cows were up for grabs as hardworking folks took time off for some mid-summer fun. Today summer fairs still abound around the country—and there are colorful traditions that linger from the past alongside new events that add to the excitement. This issue helps students compare the present to the past to see how we are connected to our traditions as a united nation.
