Learning to manage money responsibly—from earning to saving to spending—is a habit that needs to be developed early in life. Knowing if something is a true bargain can help stretch “hard to earn” dollars. But making wise economic decisions can be trickier than it seems. When looking at a purchase, young economists need to consider more than price. Student shoppers will learn to consider features that make one item a better investment than another and realize that they have spending power in their choices!
In this issue students will:
- learn the meaning of value in merchandise and comparison shopping
- defend reasons with written evidence why one choice is better than another
- identify criteria to consider when making financial decisions
- read expository text about finances
- complete a smart consumer “cloze” activity
- recognize patterns
- use the newspaper to research advertising and use of persuasive adjectives
- calculate alphabet values
