A “veteran” is an American who has served in the military to protect our nation. Thousands of veterans have fought in wars since the founding of the United States—and many lost their lives or were wounded as soldiers. November 11th is a special day to honor those who have served—and are serving—our country. It’s a day when flying the American flag is part of the tradition. This issue introduces young citizens to the meaning behind Veteran’s Day, the story of our stars and stripes, the Pledge of Allegiance and flag etiquette. Young Americans will be invited to participate in a letter writing campaign as a way to say “thank you” to a veteran, serviceman or servicewoman.
In this issue students will:
- Read expository text about a national holiday and our flag
- Learn about symbols
- Write to describe a personal hero
- Use the newspaper to locate adjectives that describe veterans
- Use code to solve puzzles
