What is a veteran, and why do they have a special day annually on November 11th? A veteran is any American who has served—or is serving—in the armed forces. The armed forces include the military, navy and air service. Veteran’s Day became an annual observance through a resolution passed in 1926. November 11th was selected because it was on this day in 1918 that nations signed the armistice—or agreement—that ended World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. This issue focuses particularly on the veterans of the Vietnam War and the monument in Washington, D.C. that honors their service.
