Deep in the dark waters below California’s Monterey Bay lurks an extraordinary angler. It lures its prey towards its enormous mouth using a light that is a shining spot at the tip of a pole projecting out from its head. It can barely see with its tiny eyes but instead will feel when a creature wanders close.
This is the Black Seadevil or Melanocetus.
Scientists at the Monterey Bay Research Institute spotted one recently using the remotely operated diving vehicle at a depth of about 1,900 feet. They believe it is the very first time one has been filmed in its habitat.
