The Voyagers – Exploring the Solar System and Beyond
In 1977, NASA launched two spacecraft to explore our solar system and beyond. They were called Voyager 1 and Voyager 2.
The twin spacecraft were launched to fly to Jupiter and Saturn where they would take pictures and do tests to learn about these planets, Saturn’s rings and the larger moons of the two planets.
But, the little spacecraft went on to do more than the scientist’s expected. They finished their studies of Jupiter and Saturn and went on to study Uranus and Neptune! In all they explored all the giant outer planets of our solar system, 48 of their moons and the mysterious rings around these planets.
The Voyagers are now on a mission to send back information from space beyond our solar system. Voyager 1 left our solar system in 2012. Voyager 2 is on its way to interstellar space.
